US 271 and SL 485 near Gladewater, TX are proposed to be widened to improve safety and accommodate an increasing traffic demand. Additional enhancements include redesigning the roadway’s grades and curves to meet current standards. The limits of the US 271 widening are from FM 16 on the southwest end to SL 485 on the northeast end. The project continues on SL 485 around Gladewater and terminates at the Upshur County Line.
Three widening alternatives have been considered and presented at the first public meeting. From the first public meeting, all public input has been collected and reviewed. Along with constraints and ROW impacts a recommended alternative was developed and presented at the second public meeting.
The proposed roadway section will be the same as previously shown. There are 4 distinct segments of roadway widening, shown below.
The first section is from FM 16 to SH 135 and proposes a rural redesign with four 12 ft lanes separated by a 76 ft depressed, grass median. It will also have median crossovers for left turns with deceleration lanes.
The second section is from SH 135 to SL 485 and SL 485 to UPRR bridge and proposes a suburban redesign with four 12 ft lanes separated by a 16 ft continuous left turn lane and 6' sidewalks on each side.
The third section is from UPRR bridge to north of US 80 and proposes a suburban redesign with two 14 ft lanes outside lanes, two 12 ft inside lanes, and separated by a 16 ft continuous left turn lane and 12' shared-use path on the left side and a 6 ft sidewalk on the right side.
The fourth section is from north of SL 485 to Upshur County line and proposes a suburban redesign with two 14 ft lanes outside lanes, two 12 ft inside lanes, and separated by a 16 ft continuous left turn lane and 6' sidewalks on each side.
